The UK’s first P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will be delivered to Kinloss airfield in 2020 because major engineering work is required on the runway at their planned main operating base at nearby Royal Air Force (RAF) Lossiemouth in northeastern Scotland.
This work will also require the RAF to temporarily re-activate the airfield in Leuchars in Fife to accommodate the quick reaction alert Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, which normally operate from RAF Lossiemouth.
An RAF spokesman told Jane’s on 14 September, “There will be a runway refurbishment at RAF Lossiemouth starting in 2019 as part of the GBP400 million [USD523.6 million] investment to accommodate both the P-8As and an additional Typhoon squadron.
