The United States has approved the sale to the Republic of Korea of six Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft (MMA) for an estimated USD2.1 billion.
The approval, which was announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 13 September, covers the aircraft in a standard US Navy (USN) configuration, as well as training and support.
The P-8A was one of a number of MMAs that South Korea evaluated as a replacement for the Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion that has been in service for more than 25 years. In June, the country’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said that it had decided on the P-8A and that it would procure it through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.
