The Republic of Korea Marine Corps (RoKMC) is considering the introduction of a large transport ship capable of carrying aircraft, the Yonhap news agency quoted RoKMC chief Lieutenant General Jun Jin-goo as saying during a speech delivered on 12 September.
“We are considering building an LPX [large platform experimental]-type ship capable of carrying aircraft in close co-operation with the [Republic of Korea] Navy [RoKN],” Lt Gen Jun was quoted as saying without specifying what type of aircraft would be operated from the naval platform.
He also said that the corps is pushing for a mid- or long-term project to expand its amphibious landing capabilities from brigade to division level by introducing more warships and aircraft, according to Yonhap.
