Ukraine reinforces its presence in Azov Sea

12 September 2018

The Ukrainian Armed Forces has begun strengthening its naval presence in the Sea of Azov, local media report.

The first of three Project 58155 ‘Gyurza-M’ armoured gun boats was transferred by road transporter (there are no connecting inland waterways) to the Azov Port of Berdyansk, arriving on 8 September. Ukraine has received six Project 58155 craft.

On 6 September, at a closed meeting of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, a range of measures was approved to reinforce its presence in the Sea of Azov and the country’s southern region, following a decree by President Petro Poroshenko. As part of this, Kiev is to create a missile-equipped naval infantry group in the area to counter potential amphibious attacks and naval shore bombardments.
