The short-range air defence (SHORAD) system used by the Australian Army has received US certification, meaning that the Saab RBS 70 surface-to-air missile system can be safely deployed on operations with US and coalition forces.
The certification by the US Department of Defense’s International AIMS Program Office follows a Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) upgrade made to the system by Saab Australia, and six weeks of testing on US ranges with a range of aircraft.
The Mode 5 upgrade provides a more secure way of identifying Australian, US and coalition combat units to avoid fratricide incidents.
