- Russia has announced a major naval exercise in the Mediterranean
- It has a missile cruiser, a destroyer, five frigates, three missile corvettes, and two submarines in the region
The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) provided an explanation for a seemingly unprecedented build-up of naval force in the Mediterranean when it released a statement on 30 August saying a scheduled week-long exercise would begin on 1 September.
“A total of 26 warships and vessels of the Russian Navy, including two submarines, as well as 34 aircraft will take part in the event,” it said.
It added that Tu-160 missile-armed long-range bombers, Tu-142 and Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft, and Su-33 and Su-30SM fighters would also be involved.
