Greece is working on export licence documents related to the transfer of 92 surplus BMP-1A1 OST infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Egypt under a previously unreported agreement between the two governments, according to a statement briefly published on the website of the Greek Ministry of National Defence’s General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA). The statement was subsequently removed on 24 August.
The GDDIA statement said Greece would donate the BMP-1s only after Egypt finances the necessary technical inspection and restoration of the vehicles by the Greek defence industry.
The GDDIA told Greek media that the statement was “an internal document published by error”.
