Russia increases naval presence in Med

20 August 2018

Russia significantly increased its naval presence in the Mediterranean in mid-August with the arrival of a cruiser and destroyer from the Northern Fleet and another missile corvette from the Black Sea Fleet.

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 15 August that the Slava (Project 1164)-class cruiser Marshal Ustinov and Udaloy (Project 1155)-class destroyer Severomorsk had docked in Algiers. The Algerian MoD said the two vessels would remain in port for five days.

The UK’s Royal Navy reported on 8 August that one of its Type 45 destroyers shadowed the two Russian ships as they passed through the English Channel.
