The Italian Parliament approved the transfer of 12 patrol boats to Libya on 7 August.
The vessels will be operated by the Libyan Coast Guard and the Ministry of Interior, and are intended to support efforts to stem the flow of illegal migrants through the Mediterranean.
The boats are being donated under the framework of a friendship agreement signed between Italy and Libya in 2008 and a memorandum of understanding signed by the former Italian government with the Libyan Government of National Congress in 2017.
The package includes 10 refurbished ex-Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) 500-class patrol boats and two Corrubia-class patrol boats decommissioned from the Italian Customs Police (Guardia di Finanza) fleet.
