The Italian Navy will start training an initial batch of Qatar Emiri Naval Forces (QENF) personnel in September to operate new ships being built for Qatar by Fincantieri.
A steel cutting ceremony for the first of four Doha-class multirole corvettes destined for the QENF was held at Fincantieri's Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia on 31 July. The corvettes are being built under a larger EUR3.8 billion (USD4.4 billion) contract signed in June 2016, which will see the Italian shipbuilder deliver a total of seven surface vessels: four corvettes, one landing platform dock (LPD), and two offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
As part of the contract and three technical agreements, the Italian Navy is providing training for the ships’ future crews as well as technical support, in co-operation with the Italian Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Directorate of Naval Armaments, during the shipbuilding and subsequent in-service phases of the new vessels.
