The US Navy (USN) could save about USD2.5 billion if it were to fund the third and fourth Ford-class aircraft carriers under a single contract, according to USN Secretary Richard Spencer.
That is about USD500 million more than shipbuilding industry officials had estimated earlier this year.
There is a potential for even greater savings, Spencer told media on 7 August. “I’ll take [USD]2.5 billion now; that’s a preliminary number. We’re trying to get it higher,” he said.
The USN released a two-carrier request for proposal (RFP) to carrier shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries – Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS) on 19 March to determine how much money the USN could save through such a deal.
