Pro-junta parties increase likelihood of hung parliament after Thailand’s elections; increased non-violent protest risk from pro-democracy groups

On 5 August, former Bank of Thailand governor Chatumongol Sonakul was elected as the leader of the Action Coalition for Thailand, a newly formed political party that includes high-profile political figures such as anti-Shinawatra campaigner Suthep Thaugsuban.

The party supports current prime minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and his return to power after the general election, scheduled to be held between February and May 2019.
