The first of three new Aero Vodochody L-159T2 two-seat advanced jet trainers ordered by the Czech Air Force made its maiden flight on 2 August.
Prague-based Aero Vodochody Aerospace was contracted in September 2016 to provide a newer-generation L-159 trainer to fulfil the advanced flying training and future tactical needs of the air force.
The aircraft houses the same Grifo radar as the L-159 single-seat variant, as well as two 5x7 inch multifunction displays (MFDs) in both cockpits, two upgraded VS-20 ejection seats, and a pressure refuelling capability that includes external fuel tanks. It will also be night-vision goggle-compatible.
All three L-159T2s use single-seat L-159s as donor aircraft, with their nose cone, tail, rear fuselage, and wings blended into a new central and forward fuselage.
