North Korean missile production highlights risk of returning hostility; US will not want talks to fail

Senior US officials told national media on 30 July that recent satellite photography and infrared imagery had shown that North Korea was continuing production at an industrial facility in Sanumdong, the production site of two known KN-22/Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Separately, on 31 July, North Korea and South Korea held general officer-level bilateral talks for the second time following the first summit on 27 April between North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported that the topics discussed included reducing force levels along the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and withdrawing artillery from the West Sea coastline.
