Contradictory reports over US President Donald Trump’s alleged closed-door demand on 12 July that all other NATO allies should meet their 2% of GDP defence spending pledge by January 2019 – an impossible goal – or else the United States might “go it alone” has sown confusion about his real intentions and made a charade of official summit unity, despite the best efforts of NATO and national leaders to downplay the issue afterwards.
