US secretary of state’s visit to North Korea ends without substantive progress, highlighting contradictory definitions of “denuclearisation”

North Korean media agency KCNA released a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) statement on 8 July after two days of talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo following on from the 12 June summit between North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump.

The statement claimed that Kim Yong-chol, the chief delegate to the talks, had made “constructive proposals”, including a public declaration that would end the Korean War (superseding the 27 July 1953 armistice) and the “[sic] dismantling the test ground of high thrust engine to make a physical verification of ICBM [intercontinental ballistic missile] production”.
