US risks losing military technological edge to China, says JCS vice-chairman

China will achieve its goal of equalling US technological prowess by 2020 and surpassing it by the 2030s if the United States does not react to the challenge, US Air Force General Paul J Selva, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), warned in a panel discussion held on 21 June at the Washington-based Center for a New American Security.

China and Russia are doing their best to offset US capabilities in the Western Pacific and in Europe, said the general, pointing out that in both cases, Washington must protect its greatest military advantage, which he described as being the ability “to project American power when and where it is in our national interests”.
