Canada to buy new Cormorant helos, upgrade existing fleet

29 May 2018

The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) intends to acquire up to seven new aircraft to increase the size of its AgustaWestland CH-149 Cormorant search and rescue (SAR) fleet.

According to a letter of notification (LoN) issued on 24 May, the DND is looking to procure seven new helicopters to add to the 14 already in service. “The augmentation of the CH-149 fleet with a different make/type of helicopter is not feasible”, the LoN said.

The announcement of additional aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF’s) SAR fleet cited an aim of re-establishing rotary SAR operations at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Southern Ontario.
