Chinese company's expressed interest in Bulgaria's NPP project increases feasibility, environmental protests likely

On 12 May, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stated that Bulgaria's government is to ask parliament to approve the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in the northern Bulgarian town of Belene.

The Belene NPP project was cancelled in 2012. According to Borissov, parliament is likely to give its approval before the Summit of China and Central and Eastern European Countries to be held in Sofia in July. The state-owned China National Nuclear Corporation has confirmed its intention to participate in a call for proposals. The government has previously stated that the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China was interested in funding the project.
