Turkey selects BMC for Altay MBT and engine production

26 April 2018

Turkey’s Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) decided in March to start contract negotiations with BMC on the production of 250 Altay main battle tanks (MBTs) as well as the development of its powerpack, the SSM tweeted on 24 April.

The SSM did not give financial or technical details of the long-delayed project.

Turkish-Qatari armoured vehicles manufacturer BMC has teamed with Rheinmetall (39%) and Malaysian company Etika Strategi Sdn Bhd (10%) to form the Rheinmetall BMC Savunma Sanayi ve Tic AŞ (RBSS) consortium for the serial production and development of the engine of Altay MBTs.

BMC was competing with Koc Holding’s Otokar, which built Altay prototypes, as well as FNSS.
