FarSounder to provide sonar for RNZN’s future fleet replenishment tanker

24 April 2018

US-based company FarSounder has signed a contract to provide its FarSounder-1000 forward-looking sonar for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s (RNZN’s) future fleet replenishment vessel, Aotearoa .

The company announced in a 17 April statement that the sonar “will provide real-time 3D data on what is ahead as the tanker navigates the seas, giving the vessel’s crew an elevated level of safety and security”.

The company’s South Korean dealer, Oceantech Co, will be responsible for delivering the sonar for installation.

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is constructing Aotearoa under a NZD493 million (USD342 million) contract, with delivery expected to take place in 2020 and operations set to commence in March 2021.
