- India is to stand up a Defence Planning Committee charged with formulating strategy and building defence capability
- The committee’s formation has had a mixed reception in military and strategic circles
India’s federal government has instituted an integrated Defence Planning Committee (DPC) to formulate national military and security strategy, monitor and build defence capability, and progress matériel procurements.
The ‘overarching’ DPC, which will be headed by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, will also formulate India’s international defence engagement strategy and further military diplomacy to help India secure strategic leverage overseas, according to official sources.
The committee’s other members will include the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the two other service chiefs, in addition to the defence, foreign, and expenditure secretaries, who are the senior-most civil servants in their respective departments.
