Argentine Navy wants navalised Black Hawks for icebreaker

17 April 2018

The Argentine Navy has requested that Sikorsky provide options for a navalised version of the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter for general purpose missions aboard its icebreaker vessel.

The request for a naval version of the Black Hawk to replace the current Sea Kings on ARA Almirante Irízar was made as the Seahawk helicopter is too expensive. However, the baseline Black Hawk is not suitable as it does not feature folding rotor blades and tail boom, and has not been protected against salt corrosion.

Adam Schierholz, Sikorsky vice-president for Latin America told Jane's that the company is currently working on the proposal, which they expect to deliver soon.
