Japan, China resume military exchange after six years as relations improve

17 April 2018

A delegation from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) met Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera in Tokyo on 17 April, which was the first such visit in six years amid rapidly improving ties.

“We sincerely welcome the resumption of the military exchange,” Onodera said at the Ministry of Defense. “It’s important to further develop the relationship for the mutual benefit of the two countries’ peoples.”

Onodera stressed that the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula is the two nations’ common goal and that in this regard it was necessary to strengthen bilateral co-operation to put maximum pressure on North Korea.
