Spanish defence spending is set to rise 6.4% in 2018 to EUR9.25 billion (USD11.36 billion), according to data released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 3 April.
The figure was released at a special press briefing after various interpretations were made on the increase by Spanish media following the presentation of the government budget earlier in the day by Treasury Minister Cristobál Montoro.
An MoD spokesperson said it was difficult to make a direct comparison to previous budgets as parts of some areas like funding of overseas missions were now being included in the general defence budget in an effort to provide “greater transparency”.
