Leonardo team cleared to bid for UK air training contract

19 March 2018
A Leonardo-led team has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to be able to bid for its Air Support to Defence Operational Training (ASDOT) programme, which is expected to benefit UK industry by leveraging services already provided to the government, as well as through a yet-to-be-disclosed aggressor aircraft selection.
A 16 March announcement from the team – now named Red Aces – claims it can now compete for the much-anticipated aggressor programme, which is expected to see a training package developed that will be operational beyond 2035.
In addition to Leonardo, Top Aces – formerly Discovery Air Defence Services – and Inzpire comprise the Red Aces team, and while they claim that they have the capabilities to provide a “partnered, long-term, low-risk solution for the UK MoD”, no aircraft has yet been selected.
