Saudi court adviser indicates continuation of Qatari boycott, but low risk of escalation and damage to Qatari economy

07 March 2018

On 6 March, Saud Al Qahtani, the Saudi royal court adviser, used his Twitter account to downplay the prospect of any reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Qatar and the end of a boycott that has been in place since June 2017.

Qahtani has taken a prominent social media role in criticising the Emir of Qatar and quoted the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, in comparing Saudi policy to that of the United States’ to Cuba. Qahtani also highlighted the minimal economic effects that Saudi Arabia may have incurred as a result of the boycott of Qatar by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt (GC3+1).
