Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) is set to roll out a raft of measures in 2018 to improve the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF’s) ability to deal with cyber-attacks.
Defence minister Ng Eng Hen revealed during a parliamentary debate in early March that senior MINDEF and SAF officials, as well as departments in both organisations that manage sensitive information “have been deliberately targeted” by freelance hackers as well as state and non-state organisations, although he did not mention specifics.
“[One of the techniques employed is] ‘spear-phishing’,” Ng noted. “In other words, you get innocent looking emails addressed to you but it contains malicious software.”
