Iraq is looking at acquiring the S-400 long-range air defence systems from Russia, Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari confirmed to Russian journalists on 27 February.
"We want to purchase any weapons that will strengthen the security of Iraq and the country's armed forces,” Sputnik quoted him as saying. “There are a number of obstacles on the path [of buying] S-400 systems. The Iraqi side is still negotiating, and when the final decision is made, it will be considered.”
Iraq’s interest in the S-400 was revealed on 8 February, when the Russian ambassador to Baghdad told the Interfax news agency that he expected Iraq to submit “additional requests” related to the system’s acquisition.
