Assault against journalists highlights increasingly severe death, injury risks to foreign individuals investigating militia activities in CAR

21 February 2018

Two European journalists were seriously injured by ex-Séléka militias last week in the Central African Republic (CAR) town of Bria, capital of Haute-Kotto prefecture, while filming human remains in the vicinity of the Kotto river.

The exact nature of the attack and injuries are unknown, but as the militias mostly carry firearms and machetes, gunshots and stabbings are likely to have been involved. The two were evacuated to the capital, Bangui, on board a United Nations helicopter for hospital treatment. Local sources said the journalists were investigating abuses reportedly committed by ex-Séléka elements and had come across mass graves.
