The UK government has confirmed the sale of the landing platform helicopter (LPH) vessel HMS Ocean to Brazil for GBP84 million (USD117 million).
Under a sales agreement signed on 19 February, the Brazilian Navy will take possession of the 22,000-tonne specialist amphibious aviation ship in June this year. The deal includes modifications to Ocean to be completed by Babcock and BAE Systems prior to the handover.
Commissioned into the UK Royal Navy (RN) in 1998, Ocean has covered more than 450,000 n miles (833,400 km) during its career. The decision to take the ship out of service in 2018 was confirmed in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR15).
Ocean completed its last operational deployment in December 2017, and will formally decommission in Devonport at the end of March. The sale to Brazil was managed by the Defence Equipment Sales Authority, which is part of the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment and Support organisation.
