MDA budget supports Aegis, undeterred by recent test failure

14 February 2018

Despite a recent ballistic missile defence (BMD) test failure with a Standard Missile (SM)-3 Block 2A variant, the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) is continuing to rely on US Navy (USN) ships and facilities equipped with the Aegis combat systems.

The MDA’s fiscal year (FY) 2019 request for the Aegis BMD is USD1.8 billion, which includes sustaining the deployed SM-3 inventory.

That amount includes about USD708.7 million to procure 37 SM-3 Block IB missiles and 6 SM-3 IIA missiles for deployment on land at the Aegis Ashore sites in Romania and Poland, and at sea on a multimission Aegis BMD ships, along with associated hardware and support costs.
