Italian defence minister Roberta Pinotti has confirmed that initial funding for a third batch of Type 212A diesel-electric submarines for the Italian Navy has been approved for 2018.
“Italy’s MoD [Ministry of Defence] will allocate the initial funding for the procurement of two additional submarines of the 212A family this year,” Pinotti said during the launch of the eighth Carlo Bergamini-class FREMM frigate for the Italian Navy at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso shipyard on 3 February.
“The Italian Navy’s underwater component is playing a vital role in contributing to maritime surveillance and security operations [in the Mediterranean],” Pinotti said. “We therefore wish to continue developing this expertise with the procurement of a third batch of two submarines belonging to the 212A family under a EUR1 billion [USD1.2 billion] investment.”
