Romania is progressing plans to equip its navy with new submarines under a modernisation programme intended to take effect in 2020, the country’s new defence minister has said.
"We want to present to the Supreme Council of National Defense and to parliament a new medium- to long-term programme for equipping the navy with three new submarines," Mihai Fifor told a media briefing at the port of Constanta on 2 February
Fifor acknowledged the project might appear “overambitious”, but said it was feasible and could be carried out locally at Romanian shipyards. “We are now at the stage of determining the technical parameters of the submarines," he added.
