UK parliamentary defence committee warns against retiring amphibious ships

05 February 2018

The UK parliament’s defence committee has warned against retiring the Royal Navy’s Albion-class landing craft dock (LDC), saying it would spell out the “Sunset of the Royal Marines”. In a report of the same name published on 4 February, the Commons Defence Committee (CDC) said further reductions in the UK Royal Marines and the early retirement of HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark would mean the United Kingdom would lose its amphibious capabilities.

Citing leaked plans in the National Security Capability Review (NSCR), the CDC is concerned that the Royal Marines could be cut by a further 2,000 after already seeing their numbers fall from 7,020 to 6,580 since 2011.
