Brazil to begin first submarine’s integration

Shipbuilder Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) will begin integration work on the first Riachuelo-class S-BR diesel-electric submarine for the Brazilian Navy on 20 February, according to a navy source.

Brazilian President Michel Temer is expected to attend the event.

Integration of the five hull sections of first-in-class Riachuelo (S 40), and then finishing and testing, will be done at Estaleiro de Construção’s (ESC’s) assembly hall prior launch in the second half of 2018 and commissioning in 2020, the source told Jane’s .

S-BR was designed for anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. It displaces 1.870 tonnes and measures 71.6 m long.
