Australia removes Air Warfare Destroyer project from ‘concern list’

01 February 2018

The Australian government has removed the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project from its ‘Projects of Concern’ ('PoC') list following continuing improvements in shipbuilding performance, the Department of Defence (DoD) in Canberra announced in a 1 February statement.

“Due to the long-term reform arrangements put in place by the [Malcolm] Turnbull government, the Air Warfare Destroyer project is now back on track,” Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne was quoted as saying in the statement.

Following an independent review by Professor Don Winter and Dr John White as well as a review by the Australian National Audit Office, the AWD project was placed on the 'PoC' list in June 2014 due to increasing commercial, schedule, and cost risks.
