Spanish Army chief announces reform of brigade structure

29 January 2018

The pilot brigade for a reorganised and more heavily equipped and qualified Spanish Army is due to begin operating under its new “war of the future” role later this year, the army chief of staff has announced.

The 25 January announcement was made by army General Francisco Javier Varela Salas during a presentation to the press of the military scenario Horizonte (Horizon) 2035 plan being prepared for the years up to that year.

The new army format, which stems from a directive issued in 2012, includes actions to be taken, capabilities, legislation, and training procedures for what the army has designated brigada orgánica polivalente (multi-purpose organic brigade: BOP).
