Recent Twitter activity indicates Russian plan to destabilise Bosnia ahead of general election in October

24 January 2018

During recent weeks there has been an increase in activity on Twitter by accounts promoting a narrative that is distinctly pro-Russian and favourable to the two main parties that advocate separatism and increased decentralisation in Bosnia, respectively the Bosnian Serb Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (Savez nezavisnih socijaldemokrata: SNSD) and the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hrvatska demokratska zajednica Bosne i Hercegovine: HDZ BiH).

This is a likely indicator of increasing Russian intent and willingness to deploy bots, automated computer scripts typically used to promote a selected message on social media, to shape the public debate in Bosnia in favour of its two main allies in the country, Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik of the SNSD and HDZ BiH leader Dragan Čović.
