Australia’s Department of Defence (DoD) has awarded an AUD100 million (USD80 million) contract to Brisbane-based company NIOA to supply 155 mm lightweight towed howitzer ammunition to the Australian Army under the LAND 17-1C.2 Future Artillery Ammunition programme.
“This ammunition will replace an ageing ammunition stock, providing increased range and lethality as well as a greater range of effects such as infrared illumination to enhance the army’s advanced night fighting capability,” Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said in a 23 January statement.
In a separate statement NIOA announced that it will supply the modern high-performance Rheinmetall Assegai 155 mm projectiles, including high-explosive, practice, smoke and illumination (visual and infrared) projectiles, as well as a modular propellant charge system and a range of high performance fuzes from Junghans Defence.
