The next-generation of the US Navy’s (USN's) guided missile destroyers, the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class Flight III, is finishing a final design phase and shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is scheduled to start construction in May.
Final 3D ‘zone’ modelling was completed in 15 December 2017 and the navy is reviewing those designs before work on the vessels begins, Captain Casey Moton, DDG 51 programme manager at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), said during 10 January remarks at the annual Surface Navy conference.
General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works (BIW) and HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding – which are in the processes of delivering and constructing new but earlier-generation Flight IIA vessels – will also be sharing work on the Flight III.
