A US Navy (USN) team of deep-water salvage experts located a C-2A Greyhound carrier on-board delivery (COD) aircraft that crashed on 22 November into the Philippine Sea en route to aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USN officials said.
USN officials said on 5 January that the salvage team found the aircraft the previous week.
The C-2A rests at a depth of about 18,500 ft, making the salvage phase of this operation the deepest recovery attempt of an aircraft to date, USN officials said.
In the coming weeks, the team will return to the site with a side-scan sonar and remotely operated vehicle to map the debris field and attach heavy lines for lifting the aircraft to the surface, the officials said.
