Poland’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) has revealed that it expects the selection of a strategic partner for the country’s Orka submarine programme to be made this month.
The MND is looking to procure three submarines equipped with submarine-launched cruise missiles, with a fourth boat as an option. The delivery date for the first boat is planned for 2024–26 and the estimated cost of the programme is PLN7.5-10 billion (USD2.2-2.9 billion).
Three options are being considered by the MND: France’s Naval Group bidding the Scorpene submarine armed with the MBDA Naval Cruise Missile (NCM); Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems bidding the Type 212CD; and Saab Kockums bidding the A26 submarine.
