G5 Sahel force on track for early 2018 operationalisation

The G5 Sahel initiative that brings together Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger is on its way to meeting its aim of fielding a 5,000 strong joint anti-terrorist force by March 2018, General Mohamed Znagui Sid’Ahmed Ely, the chief of its Security and Defence Department, has told Jane’s .

The Mauritanian general said the force would cover three geographical areas: West, Centre, and East. So far, the Centre is the only operational area, with its command post (CP) at Niamey, Niger, which was involved in the force’s Operation ‘Haw Bi’ field debut in October and November.

“The West CP will be found in Mauritania, on the border with Mali.
