The Pentagon expects in January 2018 to unveil its National Defense Strategy (NDS) and in the next month unveil key nuclear weapons and missile defence reviews and the fiscal year 2019 (FY 2019) budget, but the FY 2020 budget will be “the masterpiece”, according to a top defence official.
“The essence of the strategy is that we’re restructuring the department,” Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan told reporters at the Pentagon on 21 December.
A key part of this will include bifurcating Department of Defense (DoD) operations so that a chief management officer – which on 2 January 2018 will become Jay Gibson – will oversee new ways to use technology and new practices to aid underappreciated Pentagon functions, such as human resources, financial planning, and other services.
