South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) and Ministry of Science and ICT (information and communications technology) have signed an agreement to collaborate on next-generation military technologies.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) calls for the two ministries to identify and undertake areas of joint research in military technologies that will support South Korea’s efforts to “prepare for future security threats”, said a statement published by the MND on 19 December.
Specific focuses of the agreement include research into cyber warfare, intelligent systems, unmanned technologies, “new concept weapons”, and other capabilities that are expected to be developed through South Korea’s expanding emphasis on Industry 4.0 technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, additive manufacturing, and the Industrial Internet of Things.
