17 December 2017

While tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) may have eased in recent months, Beijing has continued to carry out substantial construction activities on its dual-use facilities in the Spratly and Paracel Islands, according to a 14 December report by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Based on the analysis of commercial satellite imagery, AMTI pointed out that China has built infrastructure covering some 72 acres, or around 290,00 m², at Fiery Cross, Subi, and Mischief reefs in the Spratlys, and North, Tree, and Triton islands in the Paracels.
