Argentine Antarctic campaign in jeopardy, without platforms for resupply

The commander of Argentina’s ARA Almirante Irízar has declared the icebreaker not ready for deployment, meaning a mission to supply Argentine bases in Antarctica may be in jeopardy.

The loss of submarine ARA San Juan in November has raised concern about the Argentine Navy vessels’ serviceability, especially those recently repaired like San Juan and Almirante Irízar .

After undergoing repairs for a 2007 fire, Almirante Irízar returned this year from ice tests with some mechanical problems that needed to be fixed. The government had declared the ship to be ready anyway, but sources told Jane’s on 13 December that the commander deemed the ship unsafe.
