Romania's judiciary amendments likely to be adopted, increasing corruption risk; mass protests to probably involve low-level violence

14 December 2017

Key Points

  • The contentious draft legislation is likely to be adopted by 22 December.
  • As a result, corruption risks in the public sector will probably grow.
  • Mass protests are likely to continue, with increased likelihood of low-level violence between police and protesters, and superficial damage to public buildings.

On 11 December, the Chamber of Deputies, the lower chamber of Romania's parliament, adopted amendments to the law on the statute of judges and prosecutors, requiring the state to initiate judicial proceedings against magistrates found to have deliberately acted in error or to have demonstrated serious negligence. More contentious legislation is about to be considered by the Chamber.
