MBDA continues materials research for high-speed missiles

MBDA has disclosed details of continuing research into high-temperature materials applicable to future supersonic and hypersonic weapons.

Being pursued as part of Domain 8 of the UK/French Materials and Components for Missiles Innovation and Technology Partnership (MCM IPT) programme, parallel research threads are exploring ultra high-temperature ceramic (UHTC) composites, ceramic-to-metal joining techniques, high-temperature materials for radio frequency (RF) datalink radomes, and novel functionally graded structures based on additive manufacturing techniques. MBDA’s research work is being pursued with a number of partners in industry and academia.

With future missiles expected to operate at increasing speeds, and over longer flight durations, the performance of missile structures in extreme, high-temperature environments is becoming more critical.
